To talk about analog horror you have to start with Local 58. Local 58 marked the birth of the genre, a single comprehensive series that created many of the tropes that would be seen in other series in the genre.
Local 58 began with a horror short named "You are on the fastest available route", which begins on the "12:05 Midnight Movie" section of the Local 58 News Channel. The scene begins as a dash cam footage of a GPS system telling you directions to an unnamed location, it skips to the protagonist driving into the woods, where the GPS system then says, "In 300 ft, turn off your headlights", where the protagonist is then attacked by some creature, drives off, and the GPS system reroutes, telling you to U-turn because your destination is 300 ft behind you. It then skips to the dash cam broken, and the GPS saying you have arrived at your location, presumably marking the death of the protagonist.
Although this video was one of the least comprehensible within the large story of Local 58, it set the standard for how the videos thereafter would play out and is an important piece to note in the entirety of the genre.
Analog Horror is mainly identified by its progressively weirder or scarier themes as videos go on. "Contingency" is one of the earlier episodes in the Local 58 story, which is a fabricated government video directing the United States in case we were to completely surrender to insurmountable enemy forces. The video starts off as a normal message from the president of the United States, telling everyone to remain strong in spirit in front of enemy forces and to be with your family and God. Slowly however throughout the video you realize what the wording of the messages mean before you are asked to enter "Victory Position" and to follow the 3 Fs which are "Front Lawn" "Face Up" and "Feet Together", in which later you are told to find the nearest firearm and to commit suicide along with your pets and children in order to display your patriotism to the enemy, and to keep the United States dignified and untarnished in its history. After the video cuts out and is replaced with a message saying this is a hoax however in the background you can see a glitched-out message talking about protocol if the video is accidentally played to the public after 1970. This is simply one of the videos in the larger Local 58 universe, however, this video is one of the purest forms of analog horror, a seemingly normal video, slowly playing out into a very dark story about a fictional past and future of our own universe.
The series today is more popular than ever, not only has the series garnered far more attention due to the works of other creators, but also the series has finally taken a more comprehensive route, the series looking towards the moon and aliens as the main plot points, which was only mentioned a few times previously with the moon landings being faked in the series, which was only told to you through images from Apollo missions used as a banner for Local 58, with a timestamp that was a few years before those missions took place. The series itself garnered a lot of attention with its most recent episode, in which the line "Signs and wonders - flood our little sky - no stars above us - only eyes" was copied and spread around the internet.
