Matching a page to the intent behind the query it targets: what the page is about, who it is for, and whether it answers the question better than the results currently ranking. On-Page SEO at Amrut Services.
The pages already ranking for a query are the clearest available statement of what a search engine believes that query means. If the top ten results are comparison articles and you have written a product page, the gap is not a matter of optimisation — it is page type, and no amount of heading structure closes it. Reading the results first prevents the most expensive on-page mistake there is: writing the wrong kind of page very well. It also identifies queries where the intent is mixed and more than one page type can rank, which are usually the most winnable.
Two pages targeting the same intent compete with each other and split their own signals. Neither ranks as well as a single consolidated page would, and both cost something to maintain. On sites that have published consistently for several years this is the most common finding and the cheapest to fix: identify the overlaps, decide which URL should survive, merge the useful content into it and redirect the rest. The mapping work behind that decision is part of audit and diagnostics, and the redistribution of internal links afterwards is covered under internal linking.
Length is not a ranking factor and padding is obvious to readers and search engines alike. What matters is whether the page answers the question completely, including the questions a reader will have immediately afterwards. That is a subject-matter decision rather than a word-count target, and it is made better by someone who understands the topic than by a brief that specifies two thousand words. Where a page genuinely needs to be long it should be, and where the honest answer is three paragraphs, three paragraphs will outrank three thousand words of scaffolding.
Some fundamentals continue to earn their place. A title that states what the page is and matches how people phrase the query. A heading structure that reflects the actual argument rather than decorating it. Internal links placed where a reader would want them, with anchor text that describes the destination. Structured data where it enables a richer result. None of these are secrets, and all of them are routinely wrong on sites that have been through several rounds of redesign and several different content owners.
On large sites, on-page work is a system rather than a page-by-page exercise. Templates decide what most pages say, which means a template-level improvement multiplies across thousands of URLs and a template-level mistake does the same. This is particularly true in ecommerce, where category and product templates carry the site, and on Shopify where template control is constrained by the platform. Multi-location businesses face the same problem in a different shape, covered under local SEO.
Relevance work comes after eligibility. If pages cannot be crawled, rendered or indexed, on-page optimisation is effort spent on pages that are not competing, which is why technical constraints are cleared first. After relevance comes authority: entity and off-page work and links earned on merit. If rankings have fallen rather than failed to grow, start with recovery instead, because the cause determines whether on-page work is even the right response. Full scope is under SEO services, briefs for in-house teams under consulting, agency delivery under white label. Verticals where page depth decides everything include personal injury and criminal defence; fit is described in who I work with and the practice on the Amrut Services homepage.
The highest-return on-page work on an established site is usually not new content, it is pages already ranking between positions five and fifteen. They have proven relevance and accumulated authority; they are simply not quite good enough, or the results have moved and they have not. Updating them against what currently ranks, answering the questions the top results answer and the follow-ups they miss, and improving internal links pointing at them frequently moves them within weeks. New pages start from nothing and take far longer. Search Console query data identifies these candidates in an hour.
Keyword density stopped being a useful concept a long time ago, and writing to hit a term count produces text that readers abandon — which is itself measurable. What still matters is using the language your audience actually uses, covering the subject completely enough that nobody has to open another tab, and structuring the page so someone skimming can find the part they need. That is ordinary good writing with search intent as its brief. Where it is done properly, the terms take care of themselves and the page earns the links described under link building without a campaign.
