For this project, I had to take some cyber security training (see my certificate below!) and research two different examples of cyber security in the news. I chose identity theft and a phishing scam, so here are the summaries + links to the articles, so you can check them out yourself!
This article discusses Anton Nrecaj, a man sentenced to 2 years, with three years of conditional discharge, by committing identity theft. Identity theft when someone has access to personal information (full name, SSN, passwords, etc.) and uses it to do things that may be illegal. It is punishable by up to 30 years under federal law, and up to 15 years in the state of Maryland.
Some ways to protect yourself from identity theft is to create stong passwords - and not using the same one for multiple accounts! - not giving sensitive information to unknown/spam callers, and secure your devices.

This talks about a real life example of a phishing scam - instead of being human, it was powered by AI. Phishing refers not to hooking worms on a rod and casting it into the water with hopes of a fish; rather, it refers to the act of sending out fraudulent messages, like an email, in the hopes of "hooking" someone's personal information.
In the article, Kurt Knuttson tells us five ways we can protect ourselves from phishing scams. Two of them are enabling 2-factor authentication and inspecting email addresses and links properly.

I had to complete the 2024 CCBC CyberSecurity Training that the faculty/staff have to take every year. All the tests have to be completed with 100% accuracy to get the certification. (Good luck, professor!)
This was a very informative module. I learned about the different types of cyber security and a few ways to protect yourself from them. I also learned that cyber attacks happen very often, and it seems to be easy to fall for things like phishing scams and identity theft if you don't take preventative measures against these threats. If a link seems suspicious, hover over the link to see where it takes you!
