Museum Significance: The museum's first official Adventure Duck
"Sometimes a duck doesn't need an extraordinary past to become an important part of museum history.
When Nichole spotted Pierre on Mercari, his lavender body, magnificent white mustache, orange beret, and matching scarf immediately stood out. She bought him simply because he made her smile. At the time, there was no way to know how important he would become.
Pierre was selected as The American Rubber Duck Museum's very first official Adventure Duck and given his inaugural assignment in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He explored public art, visited the Milwaukee RiverWalk ducks, attended Derek Hough: Symphony of Dance — Encore, and joined the search for antique-store ducks needing rescue.
That first trip established something larger than Pierre himself: a museum tradition of sending selected ducks into the world to explore places, collect stories, and create connections between the collection and the world beyond it.
We still don't know who manufactured Pierre, what he was originally called, or when he was produced. But we know exactly what he became—and sometimes an object's history after entering a collection is just as important as the history that came before."

DuckDex Entry #0004
Purchased through Mercari in April 2025 under the seller's descriptive title “RUBBER DUCK - Grumpy Grouch in Purple,” this unidentified character duck was subsequently named Pierre by the museum and became The American Rubber Duck Museum's first official Adventure Duck.
For his inaugural assignment, Pierre traveled to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he explored public art, visited the Milwaukee RiverWalk ducks, attended Derek Hough: Symphony of Dance — Encore, and accompanied Nichole on a search for rubber ducks in local antique stores.
His first mission helped establish the museum's Adventure Duck tradition: sending selected collection objects into the world to experience places, document adventures, and create new stories.
Pierre's original manufacturer, product name, and production date remain unidentified.
Pierre is a museum-assigned name.
Nichole purchased Pierre through Mercari on April 12, 2025, from seller A&R Mixed Things.
The surviving transaction record identifies the listing as “RUBBER DUCK - Grumpy Grouch in Purple.” The duck itself cost $5.30. With $4.39 shipping, a $0.34 buyer-protection fee, and $0.55 tax, the total transaction was $10.58.
The order was shipped April 14 and delivered April 18, 2025. Nichole subsequently named the duck Pierre and selected him as The American Rubber Duck Museum's first official Adventure Duck.
The Mercari title provides valuable documentation of how the object was described when acquired, but there is currently no evidence that “Grumpy Grouch in Purple” was the manufacturer's original product name. Pierre's maker, original retail identity, production date, and earlier ownership history remain unknown.

Story Connection: Nichole discovered Pierre while browsing Mercari and purchased him because his distinctive French-inspired appearance stood out among other rubber ducks.
After entering the collection, Pierre was selected to represent the museum on its first official Adventure Duck mission. His Milwaukee trip transformed him from an unidentified commercial rubber duck into an object with a documented role in the museum's own institutional history.
Pierre currently retains his lavender body color, white mustache, orange beret and scarf, and painted facial details. Document his current condition photographically before additional Adventure Duck assignments so you can identify changes from travel, handling, light exposure, abrasion, or environmental conditions over time.
Because Pierre is an actively used museum object as well as a collection artifact, future adventures should balance interpretive use with preservation. Travel should avoid prolonged direct sunlight, excessive heat, moisture, crushing, and unnecessary surface contact.
Record any scratches, paint loss, staining, deformation, or other changes acquired during future documented museum adventures rather than automatically treating or restoring them.

Every duck has a story...
"Pierre reminds me that we don't always know which duck will become important.
Nichole didn't buy the oldest duck, the rarest duck, or a duck with a famous history. She simply found one that made her smile.
Then Pierre went to Milwaukee.
He explored. He met other ducks. He went to the theater. He searched antique stores. And somewhere along the way, one little lavender duck became the museum's very first Adventure Duck.
His original story may still be a mystery, but the story he's creating with us has only just begun."
