A Little Yellow Duck With a Surprisingly Big Story
Few toys are as instantly recognizable as the rubber duck. A rounded yellow body, an orange bill, maybe a squeak—and somehow, nearly everyone knows exactly what it is.
But where did the rubber duck come from?
The answer is more complicated than you might expect.
The history of the rubber duck stretches across generations of toy makers, artists, inventors, manufacturers and entertainers. It is intertwined with the development of the rubber industry, American toy manufacturing, changing materials and manufacturing methods, children's entertainment, advertising and popular culture.
And despite the rubber duck's familiarity, parts of its history remain surprisingly difficult to document.
At The American Rubber Duck Museum, we're working to change that.
