Intellectual Merit and Broader Impacts

Intellectual Merit:

The IRES-BEAMS program addresses transformational impacts of advanced materials utilized for bio and nano electronics. Investigations and outcomes from the IRES-BEAMS program will be innovative for hybrid nano-transistor structures, multilayered micro/nano-architectured membranes, and multifunctional nano-composites for devices.

Projects will be focused on two themes: Design and Fabrication of Micro/Nano Scaled Fibers for-

  • BIO devices (CNR-IPCB) and

  • ELECTRONIC devices (IIT-CNST)

Broader Impacts:

The IRES-BEAMS program proposes to make impacts in the areas of engineering education, student success, collaborative innovation, and functionalized materials development on the local, national, and international levels. The benefits of a global education will strengthen a students' global interconnectedness and awareness, cultural and language training, comparative openness beyond the classroom to embrace and promote diversity, career readiness, and student empowerment. The program will utilize websites, biweekly blogs, presentations, publications, ethical perspectives, social media (Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube), and K-12 outreach (EXPO) to disseminate the results of this work and impact to society. IRES-BEAMS participants will be required to present/publish their research annually during university Research Day, at statewide/national symposiums, and at conferences/journals such as Materials Research Society, ACS Nano, Nature, IEEE Transactions, Advanced Materials, and Frontiers in Education.
