My approach to coaching and teaching has changed significantly over my time completing the coaching pedagogy program. My knowledge of my responsibilities as a coach and educator has grown as a result of the program, which has also highlighted areas in which I may better assist my athletes and students. I now have a better understanding of the wider influence I have on young athletes, not just in terms of their physical growth but also in terms of how I influence their attitudes, social awareness, and communication abilities. This program introduced me to coaching frameworks and practices that have significantly improved my daily job. For example, I now give goal-setting and organized pre-season planning top priority. Now, I start pre-season a month early, allowing athletes to focus on skill development and teamwork from the outset, resulting in a stronger team dynamic and improved individual performance.
Together, these courses have reshaped my responsibilities as a coach. They’ve emphasized my role not only in athletic development but also in promoting personal growth, self-confidence, and resilience. My coaching now prioritizes not only building skills but also fostering healthy relationships and positive behaviors that extend beyond the field. The coursework has helped me understand different coaching tactics, athlete psychology, and the value of good communication—all of which are necessary for a successful coach. I didn't establish many goals or use many team-building techniques for each season before this program. This curriculum has helped me strengthen my coaching philosophy and practices, allowing me to create a supportive, disciplined, and growth-oriented environment. These abilities have improved both my coaching and the way I mentor students in physical education, which has enabled me to achieve my objective of having a good, long-lasting influence on their lives
Communication Skills
The Communication Skills course had a similarly profound impact. Effective communication is crucial to coaching, and this course gave useful strategies to improve both one-on-one interactions with athletes and group dynamics during practice. I gained knowledge about how to provide young athletes with constructive criticism in a way that is more approachable and less intimidating, This has been essential to my coaching since I know that an athlete's confidence and desire to improve can be directly impacted by clear, encouraging communication. One particular quality I acquired was the capacity to communicate expectations using "I" words, which promotes accountability without evoking a defensive reaction. For example, instead of saying, "You need to focus more," I might say, "I feel that our focus as a team can improve, and I believe we can work on this together." This subtle shift has had a noticeable effect on athletes’ receptiveness and motivation.
History, Sociology, and Psychology of Sport
I was greatly impacted by the History, Sociology, and Psychology of Sport course. I started to understand that my athletes were impacted by more than just their training regimens or game plans. For instance, I was more equipped to help my athletes deal with peer and societal pressures after learning about the social and psychological elements that influence sports identities. One of the cases we looked at highlighted the importance it is to comprehend the varied backgrounds of athletes, and this has since affected how I address the unique demands and difficulties of each athlete. In order to create a more welcoming and encouraging atmosphere that speaks to them personally, I now take the time to learn about their distinct goals, challenges, and cultural backgrounds. Additionally, it has inspired me to talk about sportsmanship, tenacity, and teamwork from perspectives that mirror their own, giving these virtues greater significance for them.
