PURPOSE AND CORE VALUES
With five years of experience as a middle school boys' and girls' soccer coach, my goal is to help my kids improve as individuals and as athletes. Respect, cooperation, tenacity, and sportsmanship are among my basic principles. These principles inform not only my coaching philosophy but also the atmosphere I foster in my athletes, helping them to grow not only as soccer players but also as people.
Promoting teamwork on and off the field is one way I try to impart these ideals. For instance, I build up small group drills during sessions where cooperation is important for success in order to motivate players to work together. This enables children to comprehend the value of trust and communication, two things that are essential in gaming circumstances. According to Gilbert (2017) in “Coaching Better Every Season”, building a culture of teamwork promotes long-term player development and program success, which is consistent with my aims as a coach.
I also highlight perseverance as a vital trait by pushing participants to overcome obstacles. Whenever they encounter a challenging setback or a challenging exercise, I tell them that perseverance is the key to success. By demonstrating perseverance and rewarding their accomplishments, I help my athletes develop resilience, which they may apply to other aspects of their lives. Finally, the fundamentals of my coaching are respect and sportsmanship. I tell players all the time that their behavior toward teammates, referees, and opponents is a reflection of who they are as people. Maintaining these principles has led to the development of a supportive team environment where respect for one another is valued, which has aided in our program's five-year success.
PROGRAM OUTCOMES
My program outcomes are centered on creating well-rounded players who perform well on and off the field. My main objectives are to develop character, increase technical proficiency, encourage teamwork, and increase physical fitness. I use SMART goals—Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound—for both the team and individual players in order to accomplish these results. For example, I established precise goals for player skill improvement at the beginning of the season, such increasing passing accuracy by 10% in two months. Each athlete will know exactly what they are striving toward thanks to this technique, which also sets clear standards for progress. Wekesser et al, (2023) highlights in Figure 3 that there is a significant correlation between commitment, closeness, and complementarity which all contribute to overall team success and individuals growth in loving sport. By integrating teaching strategies into coaching, coaches can better align their objectives with athlete development, fostering both personal growth and athletic success in their programs.
In addition, commitment, discipline, and resilience are the pillars of success that support my coaching philosophy. The team's objectives and my coaching style are directed by these pillars. I build dedication by encouraging players to attend practice and games on a daily basis, and I reinforce discipline with planned drills that focus on basics. Establishing an environment where players recognize that setbacks are a necessary component of learning helps players become more resilient. I make sure that players grow not just as athletes but also in areas that will help them in life after soccer by incorporating these pillars into every practice and game.
To assess the success of my coaching, I check development on a regular basis, utilizing both formal evaluations and informal observations. During practices, I assess players' skills and monitor their progress in areas like ball handling, speed, and defensive posture. In order to assess the team's performance, I also look at game metrics such as the quantity of successful passes or stops. I also have one-on-one check-ins with players on a regular basis to talk about their personal objectives and consider where they might improve. By tracking each player's progress, I can make necessary adjustments to my coaching methods and make sure they are always supported and pushed.
In the end, I can assess the effectiveness of my coaching by focusing on the pillars of success, setting SMART goals, and keeping track of my progress. These techniques not only produce quantifiable results but also support the team's motivation and concentration. My ultimate goal is to make sure that my players develop important life lessons like responsibility, perseverance, and teamwork in addition to being better soccer players. These approaches to goal-setting and progress monitoring have proved beneficial for the team's general growth, producing excellent performances and individual player development.
