MEDICAL RADIATION ALUMNI TALK

Medical Radiation Alumni Talk is an annual flagship event held by the Alumni Committee of Medical Radiation. The objectives of the event are (1) to strengthen the relationship between seniors and juniors, (2) to gain real working life experiences shared by alumni from Medical Radiation Programme, Universiti Sains Malaysia on their career or academic prospects and (3) to establish networks with the alumni. The chosen alumni for this year talk is the Inspiring Alumni for May 2022 in the website of PPSK highlighted content, Mr. Mohd Rinady Rifiat. He graduated from the School of Health Sciences, Medical Radiation Programme in 2006. He is a certified Radiation Protection Officer (RPO) and the Manager of Medical Physics at Alypz Sdn. Bhd. in Subang Jaya, Selangor. He was a pioneer RPO of Alypz Sdn Bhd, formerly known as Asia Lab (M) Sdn. Bhd., where he began his career at Asia Lab (M) Sdn. Bhd. in 2007 as an engineer and QC Assessor in the Medical Physics Department. His extensive knowledge of medical radiation instrumentation enabled him to conduct quality control on the Ministry of Health (MOH) radiology equipment covering general radiography, fluoroscopy, and dental radiography. He gained certification from HRDCorp in the Ministry of Human Resources (MOHR) Malaysia Train-The-Trainer programme in training and development programmes for RPO accreditation in Malaysia.

The program opening was officiated by Prof. Dr. Wan Rosli Wan Ishak, Dean of School of Health Sciences and was attended by the former PPSK Dean also the founder of Medical Radiation Programme in PPSK, Dato’ Dr. Ahmad Bin Hj. Zakaria. The Dean, in his speech had pointed out to our fellow students that linkages with the industry and alumni is very important to foster good networking for current students and future graduates. He suggested that every programme alumni should raise funds from every alumnus to gain a strong monetary backup in order to support future activities involving both alumni and current students. With full support from everyone in the programme, bigger events can be organized by the alumni committee with bigger impact to the current students.

The theme for this year talk are ‘Industrial Linkages of RPO in Malaysia’ & ‘Involvement of Medical Radiation Alumni as RPO’. Mr. Rinady shared his experiences on how he get involved with RPO and what area in the industries in Malaysia will be needing the Medical Radiation expertise. Two former Medical Radiation alumnus were also invited to share their experiences during the first five years of their involvement as RPO in the industry. They are Mr. Nik Kamarullah Ya Ali, medical physicist from the Radiology Department and Mr. Reduan Abdullah, medical physicist from the Department of Nuclear Medicine, Radiotherapy & Oncology, both from Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia (HUSM). This talk had gathered some of the alumni and current students in a fruitful discussion & sharing of experiences via hybrid mode live and online on Webex meeting. They showed interest in venturing into RPO in industries as they have a lot of job opportunities for the medical radiation graduates. All in all, everyone enjoyed this year talk and had hoped for more sharing sessions from the alumni in the future.
