Walter Iggleden
Walter John Iggleden was baptised at All Saints Church in Plumstead on Wednesday 02 July 1890. Walter's baptism record gives his date of birth as 05 April 1890. At that time, Walter's father, Stephen, was a Telegraphist and the family were living at 2 Oak Villas, Cantwell Road.
In March 1915, 3rd Royal Fusiliers, 85 Brigade, 28th Division were holding the line east of Kemmel in Belgium. When the Battle of Neuve Chapell began on 10th March, a few miles to the south, 3rd Royal Fusiliers were ordered to ‘display considerable activity’ in an attempt to divert German troops from Neuve Chapelle and in return they became the targets of German retaliation which essentially meant a lot more shelling.
