DESCRIPTION
Skam ("Shame" in English) is a Norwegian teen drama revolving around Oslo high school students. This online television show hosted by NRK P3, the leading TV network in Norway, was created by Julie Andem (photo). The show started in September 2015 and aired its last episode in June 2017.
Since its start, SKAM has become one of the most popular tv shows in Norway. The show also seduced a worldwide public, thanks to fans who'd translate and subtitle content in English and other languages, leading seven countries to buy the rights and create their own remake.
HOW IT WORKS
SKAM has a very original format. Every season revolves around one specific character. During about 10 weeks, we follow this character's life through their eyes.
The SKAM format is also special for its immersive experience. All episodes are cut into short clips posted throughout the week. The full episode, with all clips, only comes out at the end of the week. Inbetween clips, fans can also follow characters through text messages and Instagram posts.
REMAKES
When SKAM came to an end, nine countries took over, making their own version of the show:
- SKAM France (Paris, France)
- SKAM Italia (Rome, Italy)
- DRUCK (Berlin, Germany)
- wtFOCK (Antwerp, Belgium)
- SKAM Austin (Texas, USA)
- SKAM NL (Utrecht, The Netherlands)
- SKAM España (Madrid, Spain)
- SRAM (Zagreb, Croatia)
- Fragile (TBA, Korea)
Do all versions follow the same storyline?
All remakes follow the same format as the original SKAM. For their first seasons, they had to follow the same characters' storylines. Then, some remakes created their own original seasons, with known or new characters.
Some characters from the original SKAM were blocked by NRK, meaning remakes couldn't create seasons about them. That is because the original SKAM was planned to get 9 seasons, not only 4: Eva, Noora, Isak, Sana, then Vilde, Christina, Even, Jonas and Magnus.
FUN FACTS
The SKAM fandom is called "Skamily" (or skamfam) because we are a family 💛
Lukas von Horbatschewsky (David in Druck) later became part of the writers room for Druck's new generation. S06E05 Clip 3 was his first solo-written clip. He also made an appearance in S7.
In wtFOCK S5, Yasmina's (Nora Dari) father is actually the actress' real father.
Eskild from the original SKAM (Carl Martin Eggesbø) makes an appearance in the finale of SKAM NL S2, meeting his remake version, Ralph (Josep Hendrikx).
SKAM was originally created around Noora and William, but Julie Andem decided to make it the second season, so that the first one could give the romantic relationship a bit more background.
The famous SKAM quote "Everyone is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always." first appears on Noora's bedroom wall.
Henrik Holm (Even) and Tarjei Sandvik Moe (Isak) actually kissed in a kiss cam at the Gutten er Sulten awards. Watch the video here!
The character of P-Chris joins the Armed Forces in SKAM S4 because the actor (Herman Tømmeraas) did the same in real life.
The Balloon Squad in SKAM was first named as such on-screen in a text during 4x08 after the nickname was given to them by the fandom in 4x01 after they appeared with balloons.
Tarjei Sandvik Moe (Isak) and David Stakston (Magnus) were friends before the series and the same goes for Marlon Langeland (Jonas) and Elias Selhi (Elias).
Tarjei Sandvik Moe (Isak), David Stakston (Magnus) and Ina Svenningdal (girl-Chris) went to Nissen highschool in real life.
In SKAM 3x08, Jonas (Marlon Langeland) introduces himself to Even as Marlon, which is the actor's real name. You can hear it when you listen carefully!
The Robbe's art mural from wtFOCK S3 was supposed to be painted over after the season, but after multiple fans' requests the piece of art is still there as of today.
More to come...
