As winter break of my freshman year began, one of my high school friends approached me with a project.
I believe her words were something along the lines of: "I have a problem you and your 3D printer could help me with." I was immediately intrigued. She needed to figure out a way to keep her Mobi insulin pump on its magnetic charger in a pocket or bag.
We put our heads together and came up with a cage idea that would surround both objects without becoming too bulky.
First, I came up with a way to keep the pump from shifting around (pegs highlighted yellow, left). The front also has a hole for a signal light and a slot for the insulin line.
Next, I modeled the other side which held onto the charger. This part was more challenging as the charger had a unique curve.
It needed a lot of measuring and re-measuring, but I eventually made a model that held it securely.
The biggest challenge with this project was finding a way to keep the two halves of the cage together securely, but also allow them to pop apart easily when Lucy needed to access her pump.
The answer came to me in a lightbulb moment. One moment, I jumped up from the table and started digging through a box of my old LEGOs. I was looking for those little blue connectors (upper), that were already designed for the exact task.
To get the size right, I 3D printed many of these cubes (lower) to test the hole size required for them to push in and be pulled back out relatively easily.
