Chessboard

I designed and built this chessboard during the winter holidays in 2024 as a Christmas gift for my cousin. We have played Chess together since I was a kid and I wanted to make something particularly special for him.

Though I didn't quite finish it in time for Christmas Eve, I created every aspect of the board and designed every piece.

Design and Fabrication

One of my friends taught me how to use Fusion 360, which I used to model the pieces. When the time came to design the board, I'd already become much more confident with Onshape and opted to use that software instead. Unfortunately I used my high school account to obtain a free Fusion 360 license and lost my CAD files when I graduated.

I purchased the wood from a local carpentry store in Seattle. Then I was lucky to have a friend's dad with miter and table saws to help me cut it to shape. We spent three days in their basement cutting up the wood. I then used wood glue to assemble it. Next, I stained the wood a darker color and added the felt to protect the pieces inside during transport.
