"At baseline, 42% of children had scored zero, as one might expect at the start of school. By the end of grade 1 there were about 13% of children who scored zero. Although there is clear improvement over time, it is concerning that there were still over 8% of learners who could not read a single letter after two years of schooling. If we exclude those repeating grade 1, then we can say that about 6% of the sample could not read a single letter at the end of grade 2. It is, however, encouraging that about 36% of learners could read at least 50 letters correctly in a minute by the end of grade 2." (Taylor, Cilliers, Prinsloo, Fleisch & Reddy, 2017: 67)
