The International PGR+ group was formed in 2024 by myself and my fellow international PGR friends, Aparna Anitha and Antonia Otte. The + indicates that our group also means to include postdocs and visiting researchers from different countries!
International students face many unique struggles and barriers when moving to and settling in a new country. From visas to finding a place to live, to bank accounts, SIM cards, and finding ethnic groceries, there's a lot to handle on top of being a PhD student!
Our motivation for forming the group was to help ease this transition and provide practical, student-tested advice on life in the UK, and more specifically, Norwich.
Below are a few resources we have created for International PGRs+.
This leaflet is designed to be read by students before arrival to the UK. On it are practical pieces of advice for planning for your arrival.
In July 2025, Aparna, Antonia, and I won a departmental award for our work with the International PGR+ group! 😊
"Antonia, Alice, and Aparna have worked consistently to improve the experience for international PGR students in ENV and SCI. They created a leaflet on practical information about getting settled in the UK (covering banking, buses, phones, train tickets, housing, etc) based o ntheir experiences to improve the experience of future cohorts. They developed this through their involvement in Graduate Affairs Committee memebers, including Antonia at SCI level.
They have also initiated and run several events for international PGR students open to all PGR across SCI."
