Moonlighting -

Dance by Lunar Polarity

2017-2022

Cycle with 360° VR animation for Oculus Quest glasses

and series of 3D CGI prints

CGIs:The work was inspired by the recent discovery that the scarab aligns its path by detecting the polarization of moonlight, an aspect explored in the CGI's with swarms of scarabs disoriented by a shrouded moon.

VR: The viewer stands in a room made of ice: a photogrammetric 3D model of the Birli attic, the house of the Schlesinger Foundation in Wald/AR, for which the work was originally created in 2017. The vista first falls on the Säntis massif under a full moon, a computer generated digital elevation model textured with red plywood from a boarded window in upstate Owego. On the peneplane, a scarab circles a mirroring sphere. When the viewer turns around, a whole army of pinned dung beetles appears, one of them alive - an entomological showcase stretching as far as the eye can see.
