Welcome to my English 5 portfolio. I am at Sac State to be able to experience someplace new and to have new experiences. I am studying Criminal Justice and hope to become a detective in the future. My past experiences with reading, writing, and researching are relatively good. With more practice this semester, we will see if I am consistent with being good at these things. I think I have strengths mainly in writing and can write very good essays. A goal I have for my growth during my college experience is to be able to write at a higher level and to read at a higher level as well. Some learning challenges I worked to overcome is being able to focus in class. Some challenges I still face with reading, writing, and researching is getting burnt out fast and giving up easily when work gets difficult. My peers and instructor helped provide a community that supports my reading and writing by being friendly and open to giving positive feedback.

Here is the drafts of one of my best works, a research paper done for this class. This shows this is my best work because I took the most time to research and find out more about a topic I am interested in. As mentioned before, I write better when it is about a topic I am interested in. Here is an example of that, with my draft showing the potential of a great paper. The topic I used was space exploration, a topic in which I was very interested in. This made the draft easy to write but I still needed to make adjustments to make it a good paper.

Here is the final draft for my research paper. Here, you can see the growth I have made over time after getting my work reviewed multiple times over. This shows how I openly accepted the suggestions and used them to my advantage, making sure that my work is in the best shape possible. I used different ways of explaining my work, I added some evidence that I was missing and put in every necessary part to make it a complete paper.
3 Smart Goals
Getting good grades in each class and maintaining them throughout the semester. By getting good grades in each class and semester, I will be able to get all of my credits needed to be able to graduate in the future. I feel like I have reached these goals now that the semester is over. I have decent grades(all passing) so far and just need to turn in a few more things to solidify them.
I want to be able to write with higher vocabulary and be able to do that by the end of this semester. By having a higher vocabulary, I am able to make my work for other classes much better and sound more professional. By having more words to use, it will be easier for me to get my point across when writing for others as well. I feel like I met this goal just barely at the end. I caught myself using more advanced words in my writing to make it sound more professional for the reader.
I want to be able to research well, find credible sources that are not online specifically and be able to use that to my advantage this semester. By being able to research well, I can now find many sources that are very credible off of the internet. I can go look at books or excerpts from archives and be able to pick the best source without too much struggle and use it in my papers to make my claim stronger. I feel like I met this goal as well. Being able to use Powernotes helped a lot in my goal to becoming a better researcher. It made each source easy to find credible and using them in my paper was not a struggle for me.
