Cruise Tour
A Cruisetour is the best of both worlds. It combines a fabulous cruise with an exciting multi-night land tour traveling into the heart of Alaska and Canada. And as anyone who's traveled before knows, coastal areas are beautiful, but some of the most interesting cities and sights are often inland.
Rent a car in Anchorage
It is five hours from the city to the park entrance, with most of the accommodations just one mile farther up the highway along the Nenana River. By renting a car, you'll be able to go at you own pace and stop wherever you see fit. Remember: private vehicles are only allowed on the first 15 miles of road inside the park during the summer. Beyond that, you'll need to make arrangements to hop on a park bus or another specially permitted vehicle to drive any further into the park.
Rail
The The Alaska Railroad departs daily from Anchorage, arriving in Denali at 4 p.m. The trip north passes through the town of Talkeetna. The Denali depot is right next to the park's visitor center. You won't have to wait to see Mount McKinley either; many of the best views are along the way.
Motorcoaches
Motorcoaches also connect the city and the park. Booking with these companies gives you a guaranteed seat on a motorcoach with an expert to do all the driving. Many cruise lines offer land packages pre- or post-cruise, so check with yours if planning to cruise Alaska.
Charter Air Service
If you're under a time crunch, consider charter air service into the park companies like Kantishna Air Taxi can arrange special service from Anchorage to Kantishna inside Denali National Park. The flight lasts approximately 2 hours, and you'll need to make further arrangements for transportation around the park once you touch down. If you only have a few hours but still want to see McKinley, consider booking a round-trip sightseeing flight departing from Anchorage or Talkeetna. You'll still get views of the mountain, and be back in town in time for dinner.
Cruise Tour
The cruise tour is a land tour of interior destinations before or after a cruise. In conjunction with seven-night Alaska cruises, three- to eight-night land programs extend each trip with visits to interior destinations, such as Anchorage, Denali National Park, Talkeetna, Fairbanks and the Kenai Peninsula
Rent a car in Seward
You can rent a car in Seward and drive to Denali in one day; driving nonstop is the fastest way between the two areas. But beware! It’s a very scenic drive, so you’ll want to stop to take photos and enjoy a scenic lunch, making for a long day on the road. Bear in mind, too, that you can’t drop off your car in Denali.
Motorcoaches
It’s around 10 hours by motorcoach, making it a slower option than driving. However, of course, you don’t have to worry about renting a car or finding your way, and you can fully enjoy the gorgeous scenery along the way.
Rail
Each year, hundreds of thousands of Alaska summer visitors travel through Anchorage on their way to or from cruise ships in nearby Whittier and Seward. The port of Whittier is used by Princess Cruises, while passengers on Holland America Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Royal Caribbean Cruise Line (RCCL), Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), Regent Seven Seas Cruises and others utilize the port of Seward.

Focusing on the rich natural and cultural history of the park, this 4 ½ to 5-hour tour travels to the Teklanika River (mile 27).
Several interpretive stops enhance the experience, with an hour of off-bus experience. Beginning with a stop at the Savage Cabin, the original ranger’s cabin, provides a living history into how the cabin was once used and how it continues to be used today.
At the Teklanika River Rest Area you may have the opportunity to see wildlife on the glacially braided Teklanika River from the overlook. At Primrose Ridge, you will experience a memorable Alaskan Native presentation that will enlighten you with how the land has been used for nearly 10,000 years!
Tundra Wilderness Tour (TWT)
Offered: May 20—mid-September
Duration: 7 to 8 hours (round-trip, inclusive of all stops)
Variations of this tour have been in existence since 1923, with the first concessioner offering bus trips as far as the road extended at that time.
Today, the TWT is a 7-8 hour excursion into the park with a certified driver-naturalist. This tour provides in-depth information about the history of the park, while maintaining a keen eye in search of wildlife and photography opportunities. From May 20—31, the tour travels as far as Mile 53, Toklat River. From June 1—mid-September, the tour travels to Mile 62, Stony Overlook.
A box lunch and beverages are provided. Wheelchair accessible buses are available, and all stops are wheelchair accessible.
Kantishna Experience
Offered: June 8—mid-September
Duration: 11 to 12 hours (round-trip, inclusive of all stops)
Follow the trail of pioneer Fannie Quigley to the old gold town of Kantishna on this all-day adventure to the end of the Park Road. Your driver is a Certified Interpretive Guide and a National Park Service interpretive ranger joins you roughly halfway through your journey on this immersive experience. You will spend time in Kantishna learning about its interesting history and role in Interior Alaska.
This trip lasts 11 to 12 hours, traveling the entire 92 mile road and back over the course of the day.
The Kantishna Experience includes a lunch, snack and beverages. There are two daily departures. The tours pick up from area hotels in the early morning and depart from the Wilderness Access Center at 6:30 am and 7:30 am. They return roughly twelve hours later, and are a unique experience in the park that you don't want to miss! Specific hotel pick-up times are available from the bus company.
