We have learned about free speech and what that really means, media democracy, what conglomerates are, how the media can affect messages, the limitations of regulations of media, hate speech, and so much more.
For the goal that I researched, I was able to better understand how the environment and Earth is impacted by the everyday behaviors of humans, and I was also able to learn ways that we can combat this.
I loved doing this project because I learned about a social movement that I wasn't that informed about. This project was about researching social movements and how they become successful. Our group chose the March For Our Lives Movement which is about gun violence that stemmed from a school shooting. It was interesting to see how they used symbols to fuel their campaign and even found ways to remain relevant in today, with BLM and many other issues.
For this project, we had to create a campaign for major organizations to help with controversies that they had and save their image. We chose McDonald's because they get a lot of controversy about their food and services as a major fast food chain. With this project, I was able to better understand what it takes to create and pitch a campaign, as well as the many ideas and initiatives that need to be creatively developed to maintain a company's image.
I thought it was important to focus on the United States in this way to see the many things that the US get away with, even though they may not be immoral actions or behaviors. I learned a lot about ways that the US has violated Human Rights and international law, but also how they upheld it, so this project was very enlightening. I was also able to be more informed about human rights cases in US History.
We chose to analyze a photo of an elephant being slaughtered for their tusks because we not only felt that it captured a very large issue of human selfishness and greed, but we were also emotionally affected by the image. We wanted to learn more and it's so interesting that an image can provoke so much feeling and teach you so much just from one image.
This assignment was especially interesting because I was able to put names to biases that I have experienced or seen but didn't know what they were. We were able to not only understand what it is like to be in the teacher's position but we were also able to better understand how public diplomacy is impacted by listening and bias. This was with Lezlie Hilario, Jaylyn Murillo, and Jakob Berry.
There are many different companies that have involvement with platforms that the every day person may not know about. This is interesting and important to know because every company or conglomerate that has a share of ownership also has influence on the media platform which can affect the people.
