Course Outline: Management Information Systems
Part A – Introduction
I. Course Code and Title : MIS202: Management Information Systems
II. Credit : 3 credit hours
1. Course Summary
The 4th industrial revolution has opened up new opportunities for business enterprises equipped with modern up-to-date information systems and technologies. To respond to the rapidly changing business environment as well as to cope up with the upcoming technologies, it is necessary for businesses to implement and sustain effective technologies. As part of this process, students must be well known and advanced with technological tools and techniques that work for the best output. For this purpose, this course is designed to assist students in learning various IT tools and techniques which are available for efficient and effective management of any organization whether public or private, for profit or not for profit, manufacturing or service types in nature. They will also be taught how these can be utilized for success. Students will learn the terminology used in the field of IT and how IT principles can apply to businesses. The course stresses the competitive advantage of using IT and the return of investing in it. It focuses on the basic principles of information systems: basic ideas of IS e.g., transaction processing system (TPS), management information systems (MIS), decision support systems (DSS), artificial intelligence (AI), executive support systems (ESS), expert systems (ES), and communication, and collaboration systems, enterprise resource planning (ERP), digital firm, impact of IS in organization, the ethical and societal issues involved in IT, e-commerce, database technology, telecommunications and networking, systems development and implementation, security concepts etc.
2. Course Objectives
The fundamental objective of this course is to facilitate students explore and understand fundamental IT tools and technologies used in today’s dynamic business world. The specific objectives include making students understand of basic terminology of information technology and information systems, analyzing the importance of information systems in business, providing practical exposure of real life problem solving through application software.
3. Course Learning Outcomes
At the end of the Course, the Student will be able to-
CLO 1: Describe basic terminology of information technology and information systems.
CLO 2: Analyze the importance of information systems in business and e-business model
CLO 3: Understand database and system development concepts
CLO 4: Solve contemporary business problems and identify alternative solutions through information systems related case study
CLO 5: Write scientific report and improve oral presentation
CLO 6: Enhance skills regarding MIS professionals through lab practice

1. Assessment Pattern
Quizzes:
Altogether 4 quizzes may be taken during the semester, 2 quizzes will be taken for midterm and 2 quizzes will be taken for final term. Out of this 4 quizzes best 3 quizzes will be counted. No makeup quizzes will be taken. Students are strongly recommended not to miss any quizzes.
Assignment:
The assignment will be given to individually and group wise. The students will have to form a group consisting of 3 to 5 members. There will be several assignments. The assignment topic or case studies will be given during the class which they have to prepare at home and submit on or before the due date. No late submission of assignments will be accepted. Students will have to do 2 presentations on the given topic during the semester.
MIS practices in Bangladesh - A case of a specific company:
It's a group work. The group consisting of 3-5 members must visit the industry to prepare the report. Each group has to choose a company first and then visit the company along with all the members of the group and make an interview session with the company authorized person. The group must present their topic in the classroom. Word, PDF and PPT files should be submitted here. Your number of power point slides should be between 10 to 20.

Grades will be calculated as per the university grading structure and individual student will be evaluated based on the following criteria with respective weights.
