“ A beautiful piece about lost childhoods and the struggle to be gracious with your child self when you've been brought up in the spotlight. It saddened me how much Christopher's circumstances in the 1940s mirrored those of children exploited by their influencer parents in the digital age today. Even so, each of these characters, including Christopher's father, are rendered with such grace. The bittersweet note the piece ends on is just perfect. ”
Injured during the Second World War, Christopher Robin Milne returns home to his father, Alan Alexander Milne, beloved author of the Winnie-the-Pooh stories. Overwhelmed with the weight of his ever-stagnant legacy as a writer, Alan is given this final chance to reconnect with his son before losing him to adulthood. Meanwhile, Christopher interacts with a rather obnoxious haunting of his fictional counterpart.
"Poetic and passionate, NOW WE ARE A HUNDRED studies the emotional weight of literary fame, memory, and the search for personal identity amidst inherited legacy.”
Cast of 3 [2M, 1 CHILD]
Christopher Robin Milne
(20, M) A clever, stubborn, and lost young soldier. He's small for his age, and still remarkably boyish looking. He appreciates intellectual conversation, puzzles, and mathematics. He's trying to see a future for himself, but he's too distracted by the past.
Alan Alexander Milne
(60s, M) Longs for structure and order in a way that is unexpected for a writer. He's growing older and running out of energy. He loves his son - or he thinks he does - or he knows he should.
Christopher Robin
(6, M) Exactly what you expect him to be: A little boy with a bowl cut that falls below his ears and androgynous 1920s clothing. He's very happy, asks a lot of questions, and is sometimes a real brat. Not to be confused with Christopher Robin -- Christopher Robin is a completely different boy.
Now We Are A Hundred requires a full set. The play takes place in the Milne's cottage home, and includes scenes in a bedroom, office, on a couch, and at a kitchen table. During certain scenes, characters will appear in different parts of the house at the same time.
