While platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini, and image-generation tools provided me with a vast array of possibilities, the weight of professional responsibility remained entirely with me. I recognized early on that AI lacks the capacity for ethical architectural reasoning; it could suggest forms and layouts, but it could not comprehend the weight of historical memory inherent to Bukit Malawati. My role as the designer was to maintain a rigorous critical filter, ensuring that every AI-proposed feature served the project’s conceptual goals rather than simply showcasing technological capability. Architectural reasoning required me to evaluate AI outputs against professional standards of spatial quality and cultural relevance, a process that relies on human empathy and intent.
Human Decision Making
I approached the AI-generated alternatives as a designer navigating a sea of options. When faced with multiple massing and spatial proposals, I actively compared them against my core project themes: memory, resilience, and connectivity. I found myself frequently rejecting proposals—such as overly complex, high-maintenance facade systems or disconnected pavilions—that contradicted the project’s concept. Balancing creativity with functionality required constant recalibration. For instance, while AI offered several striking but structurally dubious forms, I selected only those that could be grounded in the site's logic, ensuring that the "Hive" strategy remained a supportive tool rather than an aesthetic distraction.
Structural Feasibility
My professional judgement was critical in bridging the gap between AI’s conceptual freedom and construction reality. I took AI-generated forms and manually stress-tested them against buildability and structural logic. I had to reject highly irregular, gravity-defying geometries produced by image generators, refining them instead into the honeycomb modular system that provides the structural coherence required for construction. This process involved careful material consideration, ensuring that the laterite stone was used in a way that respects its structural limitations and traditional masonry techniques, thereby making the design both poetic and practical.
Site Suitability
The site at Bukit Malawati demanded a deep sense of place that AI simply does not possess. I spent significant time ensuring the design remained site-responsive by manually adjusting the orientation and porosity of the hive modules to respect the existing ruins and views. Human judgement allowed me to interpret how the community would actually interact with the site, favoring paths that encourage social engagement over the sterile, optimized circulation paths that AI tools occasionally prioritized. A core component of my professional responsibility was managing architectural quality within realistic parameters. I evaluated the cost-efficiency of material selections, favoring locally sourced laterite and adaptable modular systems. I refined AI suggestions to avoid unnecessary complexity, focusing instead on "high-impact, low-maintenance" design decisions. This meant balancing the desire for iconic architecture with the realities of long-term maintenance, ensuring the project remains viable for the community of Bukit Malawati over the coming decades.
Accessibility Requirements
