Through this assignment, I learned that AI can be a valuable tool in architecture when it is used as part of a structured design workflow rather than as a replacement for design thinking. The process began with research using Gemini, which helped me understand Kuala Lumpur’s tropical climate, environmental conditions, sustainable design principles, and educational building requirements. This research provided a strong foundation for the project because the design was informed by both environmental performance and contextual understanding.
ChatGPT was particularly useful during the concept development stage. It helped transform the research into the Climate-Responsive Learning Ecosystem concept by organizing ideas into a clear architectural framework. Through this process, the Climate Atrium, five interconnected ecosystems, spatial organization, circulation strategies, and sustainability features were developed into a coherent design proposal. This demonstrated how AI can support concept generation and architectural thinking by translating information into design possibilities. However, I still needed to evaluate the suggestions and determine which ideas were most appropriate for the project.
Image-generation AI tools were useful for visual exploration and presentation development. They helped visualize the Climate Atrium, ecosystem-based spaces, roof concepts, elevated walkways, and tropical learning environments. Some outputs successfully communicated the atmosphere and overall architectural character, while others were less practical in terms of spatial organization and buildability. This highlighted the importance of critically assessing AI-generated visuals rather than accepting them at face value.
The most important lesson I learned is that human judgment remains essential throughout the design process. I had to select relevant research, refine prompts, compare outputs, reject unsuitable ideas, and make final decisions regarding the concept, spatial organization, and architectural expression. AI accelerated the workflow and expanded design exploration, but it could not fully understand user needs, site-specific conditions, architectural feasibility, or design intent on its own.
Overall, this assignment helped me understand AI as a supportive tool within the architectural design process. It can assist with research, concept development, visual exploration, and presentation preparation, but the designer remains responsible for critical thinking and final decision-making. The final Climate-Responsive Learning Ecosystem concept became stronger because AI was used thoughtfully to connect environmental responsiveness, sustainability, learning environments, and architectural design into a unified workflow.
