THE ORIGINAL PROJECT
The original project, A Studio Retreat for an Artist, aimed to design a retreat that integrates living and creative functions while responding to the lifestyle and personality of Andy Warhol. Located within a coastal mangrove environment in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan, the project addressed the relationship between architecture, user experience, and environmental conditions. The site is characterized by high humidity, strong sunlight, frequent rainfall, sea breezes, and soft ground conditions, requiring a sensitive response to the natural setting.
The project explored how architecture could support both artistic production and personal recovery. In addition to providing spaces for painting and exhibition, the proposal incorporated social and recovery areas to create a retreat that balances work, rest, and interaction. The design sought to establish a calm and protective environment while maintaining a connection to the surrounding landscape and climatic conditions.
The main objective of the project was to create a studio retreat that reflected Andy Warhol’s identity and accommodated his creative lifestyle. The proposal aimed to combine residential and working functions within a coherent spatial arrangement while providing spaces for recovery, social interaction, and artistic activities.
Another objective was to respond to the characteristics of the mangrove site and the tropical climate through orientation and site synthesis studies. The design also intended to translate Warhol’s personality and artistic character into architectural form. Keywords such as observant, experimental, business-minded, and perceptive guided the design process, while the concept of contrast became a major design theme. The project sought to create a distinctive architectural identity inspired by both Warhol’s artistic expression and precedent studies of sculptural concrete forms and arches.
The design process began with research into Andy Warhol’s artworks, personality, and social relationships. A mood board was developed to understand themes of pop art, media, consumer culture, repetition, and contrast. These studies established the conceptual foundation for the proposal.
Spatial organization was based on a spinal typology, which arranged the functions along a linear circulation system. Spaces were categorized into recovery, social, painting, and circulation zones. This arrangement helped organize different activities while maintaining connections between spaces.
Site analysis and synthesis considered climate and natural features. Orientation and environmental conditions influenced the placement of spaces and their relationship with surrounding vegetation. The architectural form was further developed through massing studies and physical models.
Material inspiration was derived from the precedent study of Republic Construction Architecture Studio, which emphasized raw concrete surfaces and arched geometry. These elements influenced the sculptural quality of the building and contributed to the calm and protective atmosphere intended for the retreat. The design process involved conceptual studies, diagrams, sketches, massing explorations, and iterative model development before arriving at the final proposal.
One of the strengths of the project was the strong relationship between the user profile and architectural expression. Research into Andy Warhol’s personality and artistic works provided a clear conceptual direction that informed the design language. The use of arches and sculptural forms created a distinctive identity and gave the retreat a unique architectural character.
The project also demonstrated a clear spatial organization through the spinal arrangement, which established logical relationships between living, working, and recovery spaces. Site studies and climate analysis showed consideration for environmental conditions and the surrounding mangrove context.
Another strength was the iterative design process. The proposal evolved through sketches, diagrams, and physical models, reflecting continuous refinement and experimentation. The project effectively communicated ideas through drawings, sections, elevations, and three-dimensional representations.
Despite its conceptual strengths, several limitations can be identified. Although climate and nature studies were conducted, environmental strategies were only broadly addressed and lacked detailed solutions for daylight control, ventilation, and passive cooling. Greater integration of sustainable design principles could have improved the building's performance.
The formal language focused strongly on sculptural and arched geometries, which may have limited flexibility and efficiency in certain interior spaces. The relationship between interior functions and external spaces could also have been explored more thoroughly to strengthen connections with the mangrove environment.
Material considerations were primarily based on aesthetic inspiration rather than technical performance or sustainability. In addition, the project emphasized conceptual development and physical form, while structural systems and construction feasibility were not extensively investigated.
These limitations suggest opportunities for further development through AI-assisted redesign. Artificial intelligence tools could support environmental simulations, optimize spatial relationships, evaluate daylight and airflow performance, explore alternative forms, and propose more sustainable material and structural solutions while maintaining the original design intention.
