Las Autoridades del Canal han tomado la nueva medida debido a una extrema sequía que atraviesa el país y que ha limitado la disponibilidad de agua dulce en los lagos que alimentan el canal.
Fue en agosto que Ricaurte Vásquez, administrador del Canal quien aseguró que se reduciría el tránsito diario a través del canal de entre 30 y 32 embarcaciones, en lugar de los habituales 36 a 38 barcos que atendían.
La ACP explicó que los cruces máximos permitidos serán divididos de la siguiente manera: nueve por la esclusa Neopanamax y 22 por la Panamax
