AI in Action - ODE Cadre, Sep 2026

The following presentation was a presentation I gave alongside Jacob Niebergall at an ODE Cadre meeting held on 9/18/2026.

Our presentation, AI in Action: From the District to the Classroom, focused on helping leaders across the state see the importance of Generative AI Literacy in K-12 and what needs to be done in order for teachers to start teaching and using GenAI in the classroom.

Key points:

• Students are using AI without any explicitly taught guidance and instruction. This is a safety and privacy issue.

• Before that happens, teachers need to be instructed on its use with school/district led PD.

• Before that happens, Schools & Districts need to come up with Policies for the use of GenAI in the classroom. This can include no use, but districts should really think about the implications of that before cutting off access to GenAI completely.

• When GenAI in used in the classroom, it should always be with an identifiable purpose and ethical implications of its use should be considered in advance.

• A list of suggested GenAI literacies is provided.

• A list of PD topic ideas is provided.

• A path-to-policy framework is provided.

• Examples of implementation in various settings is provided.
