The AIR-SATREPS Project is a collaborative research initiative between Cambodia and Japan, supported by the Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS) under the joint sponsorship of JICA and JST. The project aims to establish a comprehensive risk management platform for air pollution in Cambodia by integrating real-time air quality monitoring, advanced chemical analysis, and capacity building. Through institutional collaboration and scientific innovation, AIR-SATREPS seeks to provide reliable environmental data, strengthen national expertise, and contribute to evidence-based policymaking for improved public health and sustainable development.

The Challenge: Why This Project Matters

Cambodia’s rapid economic growth has led to a sharp rise in air pollution, driven by increasing traffic, construction activities, and the open burning of waste and agricultural residues. Yet, the country currently lacks the scientific infrastructure and skilled human resources needed to monitor and manage air quality effectively. Without reliable data or coordinated systems, the health and environmental risks from air pollution remain largely unaddressed.

🎯 Project Purpose and Vision

To respond to this urgent challenge, the AIR-SATREPS Project aims to build Cambodia’s first comprehensive Risk Management Platform for Air Pollution, combining technology, research, and capacity building to reduce health risks and promote sustainable development. Our long-term goal is to establish a self-reliant, a scientifically grounded, and sustainable system to monitor air pollution and support data-driven policy.

Human resource development is central to AIR-SATREPS. The project recognizes that long-term sustainability depends not only on advanced technology and research infrastructure, but also on empowering people who can operate, manage, maintain, and sustain these systems. That's why AIR-SATREPS is significantly focusing on training and mentoring Cambodian researchers, engineers, government officers, and young researchers who to become leading experts in air quality management and atmospheric science.

The AIR-SATREPS project is a collaborative effort between Japan and Cambodia to address shared environmental challenges. It was established through the joint commitment of academic and governmental institutions from both countries.

With support from JICA, JST, and Cambodia’s Ministry of Environment (MoE) and Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MoEYS), the project is co-led by Kanazawa University and the Institute of Technology of Cambodia (ITC). Collaborative research groups, strengthened by the active involvement of partner universities and ministries, work closely to drive meaningful scientific outcomes and contribute to evidence-based environmental solutions.
