Tinker Air Force Base Golf Course: Where the greens roll fast and the welcome runs deep
Tucked into the heart of Oklahoma, Tinker Air Force Base is home to a golf course that's been quietly earning a reputation. Course Manager Steve will tell you straight: "We've got the best greens in town." Play here and you'll find out, this isn't just talk.
The conditions are dialed in. The team treats you like family. And if you can handle a little Oklahoma wind, you're in for a solid round of golf.
The Course: Beautiful, Playable, and Surprisingly Green
Tinker's layout is what you'd call friendly with teeth. The course flows well, mixing wide-open holes with tree-lined challenges. Two creeks run the length of the property, adding character and the occasional hazard.
What really stands out? The greens. They say that the superintendent treats them like his front yard, and it shows. PGA-level players have come through and walked away impressed. They roll fast (faster than my home course), consistent and true.
The fairways are green year-round, which is borderline miraculous for Oklahoma in late summer. Rain has been generous, and the grounds crew knows how to work with it.
Holes Worth Knowing
Hole 18 is your closer and your test. This long par 5 runs downhill and crosses a creek about three-quarters of the way to the green. You've got to think your way through. Lay up to the creek, then chip uphill to the green. Strategic golf at its best.
Hole 4 is the friendliest on the course. There's a water hazard on the left, but the hole is manageable. If you're a high-handicapper like me, this is where you catch your breath.
The Par 3s are highlights across the board. They're fair, reachable, and give you a legitimate shot at par or better if the wind's at your back.
Hole 3 runs along the creek and feels tighter than it probably is. If you're drawn to water like my golf balls seem to be, this one might give you trouble.
A Course With Stories
On Hole 7, you'll cross a bridge dedicated to Leroy Stutz, a Vietnam POW who spent over 2,500 days in captivity. He retired in Oklahoma City and became a beloved member at Tinker. The bridge honors his memory. Before tournaments, a volunteer shares his story. One of those quiet moments that puts things into perspective.
Over on Hole 12, there's an orange sign on a tree. The sign is dedicated to a golfer who hit that tree every single time he teed off. His buddies made it official after he passed. This kind of tradition that gives a course soul.
What the Locals Say
If you ask the regulars for advice, they'll tell you two things: bring at least two sleeves of balls, and respect the wind. Oklahoma doesn't mess around when it comes to breeze. On most days, figure on a one-club adjustment. The wind usually runs north-south, and so do most of the holes. That means you'll get help on some shots and a fight on others.
The course is pretty flat with some gentle rolls, especially around the water features. It's easily walkable, but a cart makes the day easier.
The Team and the Vibe
Steve and his crew run a tight ship. They know the course, they know the game, and they genuinely care about your experience. Walk into the pro shop and you're treated like family.
They've got a rec aide there who can fix anything: bent club, broken shaft, you name it. Next time I need my ball retriever re-gripped, I know where to go.
The grill is in transition right now, but grab-and-go options are available in the pro shop. Snickers bars and Uncrustables move fast. Beer on the turn? Absolutely. Steve calls it the "shot straightener," and on a hot Oklahoma day, he's not wrong.
Practice and Amenities
The range is full-length. It'll handle anything you can throw at it, even if you're pushing 350 yards (not my problem). There's a chipping and pitching area with a bunker, plus a quality putting green that rolls like the course.
Lessons are available. If you're looking to tighten up your game, they've got TrackMan and multiple instructors who know their stuff.
The pro shop is well-stocked with Callaway, Footjoy, Ping, and more. They've even designed some logo gear worth checking out.
The Final Take: This place exceeds expectations
Tinker Air Force Base Golf Course is one of those places that exceeds expectations. The conditions rival any city course in the area. The greens are elite. The pace of play is managed well. And the people genuinely want you to have a great round.
It's solid, well-maintained, and welcoming. If you're in Oklahoma and have base access, make the trip.
Play smart, bring extra balls, and tip your cap for the memories on Holes 7 and 12.
