Where Southern Charm Meets Par
There's a place in the heart of South Carolina where your slice might end up in a palm tree instead of a pine. Where the fairways stay green thanks to generous rainfall, and the breakfast burritos are so hot they'll keep you warm through three holes. Welcome to Carolina Lakes GC at Shaw AFB.
This isn't just golf. It's Southern hospitality with a scorecard. It's 18 holes of challenge wrapped in Palmetto State charm. And yes, you'll probably need that extra sleeve of balls.
A Course That Plays Nice (Mostly)
At 5,907 yards and par 71, Shaw's layout is what the locals call "good for novice golfer or your best pro." Translation? It won't destroy your confidence, but it'll definitely keep you honest. The fairways are more open than you'd find up north, which is music to the ears of us high-handicap heroes who've made peace with the occasional wayward drive.
Two lakes weave through the course, covering three holes on one side and creating what Ryan from the pro shop diplomatically calls "a river flowing across" on the other. Don't let that gentle description fool you because those water hazards have been collecting golf balls like they're running a side business.
The Challenge: Hole 4's Tree Situation
For us right-handers shooting in the low-to-mid 90s, Hole 4 is where things get interesting. It's a slight dogleg left with a tree positioned about 60 yards from the tee box that's just off-center enough to mess with your head. The wisdom says, "there's no trees in the middle of the fairway," and that's technically right. But this one might as well be, especially if you're like me with a slice that shows up uninvited sometimes.
The Showstopper: Hole 18
Here's where Shaw really shines. Hole 18 is a gorgeous little par-3 that shoots right into the back of the clubhouse deck. Picture this: you're standing on the tee, green right in front of the deck, people gathered to watch (and possibly heckle), and you've got one shot to either be the hero or provide entertainment.
The Signature Views: Holes 7 and 18
Shaw claims two signature holes, and they're both par-3s with serious photo ops. Hole 7 plays over a beautiful pond. Water level in the pond has been rising lately, whether due to rainfall or balls which failed their mission, you decide. I know I contributed.
Hole 18, as mentioned, is the clubhouse stunner where tournaments end and stories begin.
Local Intel: Everything Breaks to the Flight Line
Here's the insider knowledge that separates the regulars from the visitors: everything breaks toward the flight line. Everything. The locals know this. They'll play with you, watch you line up a putt, and only mention this crucial detail after you've already watched your ball roll past the hole.
Fuel for the Round
The café opens early with breakfast until 1 p.m., then switches to lunch. Their breakfast burritos have earned legendary status and are so hot they're basically "hand warmers" that'll keep you toasty for a couple holes before you actually eat them. For lunch, locals swear by the JFK roast beef sandwich, which comes "packed with meat" and thick enough to fuel you through the back nine.
Beyond the 18th Green
Shaw's got something you won't find at most golf facilities: two axe-throwing rooms with digital animation. Whether you're battling zombies on screen or going for traditional targets, it's a unique way to work on your "cut shot" both on and off the course.
The driving range got a recent makeover with a new overhang, and the whole facility has that well-maintained feel that comes from people who genuinely care about the golfer experience.
The Bottom Line: Customer Service Champions
What sets Shaw apart isn't just the layout or the facilities but the people. From the pro shop to the snack bar to the maintenance crew, everyone's genuinely friendly and knowledgeable. They'll stop what they're doing to answer questions, treat every golfer the same whether they're a colonel or an E-1, and make you feel like part of the family.
In a world where some pro shops treat you like a number, Shaw treats you like someone. That's the kind of detail that turns a good golf experience into a great one.
Final Thoughts: You'll Want to Come Back
Shaw AFB Golf Course delivers exactly what we high-handicap golfers are looking for: a fair challenge, friendly faces, and enough character to keep you talking about it long after you've signed your scorecard.
Whether you're stationed in the area or just passing through the Palmetto State, bring your A-game, your sense of humor, and maybe an extra sleeve or two. And if you've got time after your round, stick around for some axe throwing. Where else can you work on your slice in two completely different ways?
