Picture this: you're teeing off as a B-52 bomber soars overhead, a dakrat pops its cute head up to watch, and you let it fly under a blue sky that would make a postcard jealous. Welcome to another day at Rough Rider Golf Course, North Dakota’s most unreasonably cool military golf experience. It's a course that feels like a remote retreat from the world, complete with flyovers and fox sightings.
Unexpected Vibes in the Middle of Nowhere
The course sits between the North and South gates of Minot AFB, about 60 miles south of Canada. Despite the remote location, it’s full of small-town charm, rolling greens, and a staff that makes you feel like Norm walking into Cheers.
And the value? Absolutely worth talking about.
Mike Guthrie, the golf course manager and a retired USAF vet, says it best: “For the price point, this is the best course to play in the area.”
Hard to argue. From freshly planted trees to well-maintained greens, this place punches way above its weight class. It's beautiful, quiet, and a bit deceptive...in a good, challenging way. You start off with a relatively easy short Par 5 to build your confidence. Then you get hit with long Par 3 to bring you back to earth.
Best hole for the vibes?
Hole 5 was my favorite. It's a scenic Par-3 over a pond. Around 160 yards. Forgiving front edge. Looks like it belongs on a calendar.
Most humbling hole?
Hole 2. It’s a 230-yard par-3. After easing into your round with a friendly par-5, you’re suddenly faced with this beast. Good luck.
And let’s talk about the native area. It’s unforgiving, and happy to swallow your ball forever. Just like that. You see, this area is home to the Dakota Richardson ground squirrel, locally known as dakrats.
These cute furry things burrow throughout the native area, working overtime to sabotage your score. I lost three balls to those critters (or my slice, you tell me). You'll definitely want to stay on the fairway here.
The other thing to consider here is wind. A calm day means 10 to 15 mph. Gusts can reach 40 or more. Be ready to play in this. I lost two balls to the wind (or my snap hook, you tell me), But hey, that’s golf.
The Whole Golf Experience
There’s a solid driving range, a putting and chipping green, and a pro shop stocked with the essentials. If you need something they don’t have, Mike will gladly order it.
Snacks and drinks are available.
Look, up in the sky!
While you're here, definitely take in all the skies have to offer. You may see a B-52 flying overhead, helicopters on maneuvers...and if you happen to be there at the right time, you can watch the Northern Lights dance in heavens.
The Final Take
Minot AFB Golf Course is more than a place to play. It’s an experience. The friendly vibe, the military flyovers, the pristine greens, and the local wildlife all come together to create something truly special.
If you’re anywhere near North Dakota, or even if you’re not, go play it.
You’ll laugh, you’ll lose a few balls, and you’ll have a story to tell.
Planning Your Visit
While you're in the area, explore Minot's rich history, explore local shops and eclectic eateries, take in a museum or two, or take a short drive up to Canada. If you're into outdoor adventures, check out all the offerings that Minot ODR has to offer.
