Have you ever striped a drive down a striped fairway? A drive that flew 30-40 yards further than you're used to?
If you're ever in Utah, you've got to play Hubbard Memorial GC at Hill AFB! It's been called the Torrey Pines of the military. Words struggle to fully convey the experience here.
Picture yourself in a setting suitable for a pro tour event. Striped fairways lead the way to lightning-fast, undulating bent grass greens. Stands of trees separate the pristine green fairways. Off in the distance stand majestic mountains that are capped with snow for much of the year. It's a magic kind of medicine that no doctor could prescribe.
Playing here is like a dream come true. For a high-handicapper like me, the course is pretty straightforward. The course is player-friendly, not many doglegs, and not much water to worry about.
When you play here, definitely bring your short game. Make sure your chipping is on-point. Be prepared for wicked-fast greens that are large and wavey.
My favorite hole here was number 10. It's a what-you-see-is-what-you-get Par 4. It's an easy GIR, even for me. And by then, I was getting used to the speed of the greens.
Hole 6 gave me the most difficulty. It's a long Par 3. The distance is offset somewhat since you're hitting further due to the 4300-foot elevation. Greenside elements here will challenge you. I also had lots of fun challenges reading the greens, up and downs, and the speed. I easily doubled the par on this hole and was humbled doing it.
Some courses boast of their signature holes. The signatures here are the greens and what's immediately around them.
This track gave me my best golf experience ever. It wasn't the best score I've ever done, but that doesn't matter when you're playing on such a pristine part of the planet. The whole experience was sublime. Yeah, I looked up to get the right word - of such excellence, grandeur, or beauty as to inspire great admiration or awe.
People Working With Nature
Golf course manager Jason Woodling took some time to talk with me about the facility, but more importantly, the people. He pointed out how Jason Moon, the superintendent, keeps the fairways and greens in such great conditions. Moon won the Utah PGA Superintendent of the Year award in the public course category in 2023. Moon credits his staff, and Woodling praises the customer service attitudes of the pro shop and food staffs.
The Other Stuff
The practice green here is first rate, mimicking what you will find on the course. The driving range is suitable for working out the kinks. The clubhouse is one of the newest in the Air Force. The friendly folks in the pro shop will help you select the right items from makers you'd expect to find at fancy country clubs.
The Halfway House
No review of Hubbard Memorial GC would be complete without mention of the Halfway House. Your round will take you by here twice. Stop in for food or drink, served up with a smile. The menu is first-rate. I, of course, had to have the Bogey Burger, which was super tasty. Be prepared for long lines at lunchtimes. People come from miles around to eat here.

The Final Take
Hubbard Memorial GC at Hill AFB is one of the best military courses in the world. Playing here conjurs up feelings of playing at an upscale private country club or PGA Tour event. It's also exclusive to people who can get on base. Unlike other Air Force golf courses, this one is not open to the general public. I cannot wait to go back!
