Thinking About Thinking
Why Metacognition Matters in the Age of AI
When students use AI, the risk isn't just that they’ll copy—it’s that they’ll skip the thinking entirely. That’s where metacognition becomes essential.
Metacognition is the ability to think about your own thinking. It’s the pause between asking and accepting. It’s when a student says:
“Wait—do I understand this? Is this a good direction? Why did I choose that?”
The AIDA Framework builds metacognition into every phase. It gives students opportunities to slow down, reflect, and make intentional decisions—not just generate outputs.
AIDA as a Metacognitive Framework
Assist – “What do I already know? What’s unclear?”
Investigate – “What’s worth exploring? What don’t I understand yet?”
Dialogue – “Does this make sense? What’s another way to look at it?”
Apply – “How do I show what I’ve learned? What choices am I making here?”
The most powerful use of AI isn’t what it creates—it’s what it helps students notice about their own thinking.
