Deepfakes are not unique to AI. It has long been possible to create an image or video that is not real. However, AI makes that much easier, quicker and, possibly, more convincing.
Deepfakes are creations that appear to be real. They are inherently dangerous when incidents are created and presented as being real events or news. Equally there are real dangers when well-known people are shown to be saying something they never said or shown in situations that are not real. Those situations might be highly embarrassing for them. They might ruin their careers.
Classic examples include the Pope wearing a puffer jacket and Donald Trump being arrested.

At first glance it is an incredible example of robotics. This my well be what we see one day but this is not real.Â
The really incredible use of AI here is in the editing of the original video. Table tennis play Yang Wang has been edited out and replaced by a robot.
