General Design Overview:
Ornament Symbolism: None. I'm sick of floral symbolism after the last three Austen novels, and nothing in Herbarium Amboinensis is labeled in a language I can read. Every design choice was made based on aesthetics and aesthetics only.
Minimalist color scheme that will print legibly/nicely in both black and white and color
Picked plants that felt vining/tangled, as a reflection of the book dealing with socially complex issues regarding class mobility and female independence
Did not ornament / have a separate design for blank left pages at chapter starts; used left-hand body pages.
Also did not split this into Volumes One and Two, even though the original publication did. The page count is low enough that I didn't really feel the need.
Images here are cropped to disclude the bleed; all artwork extends fully into the bleed in the original files.
Large, ornate but faded drop cap
Initial words are bolded in a brighter color, to draw the eye
