JOACHIN SOROLLA: THE GREATEST SPANISH IMPRESSIONIST

June 9-11, 4 p.m.

Born in Valencia in 1863, Joachin Sorolla was one one of the most acclaimed Impressionists of Spain, famous for his uncanny ability to capture the effects of Mediterranean sunlight. From 1890, he exhibited his works both in many European capitals and as far away as in Buenos Aires. In 1895, his painting 'Return from Fishing' (now in the Musée d'Orsay, Paris) was acquired by the French state, confirming his status as a major international figure. When he died in 1923, he was regarded as a national hero. In this special two-part program, we explore the various facets of his pictorial language, as well as the reasons for his relative obscurity outside his country.

Structure: The lecture is a live event via zoom: a brief check and introduction, to ensure that participants have been able to connect, followed by a slide-presentation of about 50-60 minutes, and a Q&A discussion of about 20-30 minutes. Participants do not have to sign up for a zoom account. The link to the lecture is sent on the day of the event.

Fee: 40 USD per person for the two-part series
