MARY CASSATT RECONSIDERED

June 18, 20, 22 - 4 p.m.

Born in Pennsylvania in 1844, Mary Cassatt spent most of her adult life in Paris, challenging the conventional expectations of the elite social cirlces she came from. It was in the French art capital that she felt free enough to pursue a career as a professional artist, developing significant relationships with fellow painters such as Edgar Degas. Recognized in her lifetime for her intimate depictions of women and children, she made the social, intellectual, and working lives of modern women a core subject of her works in a variety of media – including prints, paintings, and pastels. In this series of three lectures, organized to coincide with a major retrospective of her work at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, we delve deeper into her unique vision and contribution to the avant-garde movements in the visual arts of the later part of the 19th century.
