Welcome to Africa BEDI – Built Environment Digital Innovation
Africa BEDI (Built Environment Digital Innovation) is a strategic initiative based at the University of Pretoria, designed to lead Africa’s transformation in the digital built environment. As cities and campuses across the continent face the challenges of rapid urban growth, climate change, and infrastructural demands, Africa BEDI provides a bold, data-driven response. We bridge academic research with operational systems to pioneer innovative, sustainable, and inclusive solutions that shape the future of Africa’s buildings, cities, and communities.
Our work is grounded in the development of digital twins - dynamic, real-time digital models of physical infrastructure - and the intelligent use of integrated data platforms. These technologies improve decision-making, enhance facilities management, and enable institutions to become smarter and more efficient. Africa BEDI also supports interdisciplinary research, postgraduate training, and executive education to build capacity for professionals navigating this emerging landscape.
The initiative is structured around a dual mandate: operational innovation through the Department of Facilities Management and academic excellence through the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology (EBIT). Through this model, Africa BEDI fosters collaboration across departments, engages with industry, and aligns its goals with the University’s Digital Transformation Strategy (2023–2026).
Africa BEDI is more than a research initiative -it is a living lab, a platform for partnerships, and a driver of real-world impact. From reducing costs and carbon footprints to rethinking education and urban design, we are committed to co-creating a digitally empowered future for Africa’s built environment.
