While studying the first grade plant standard in science; students have been able to do multiple hands on activities to learn the parts of a plant and the needs of a plant. Students germinated seeds and were able to see the formation of roots, stems and leaves.
Mrs. Joslin's class partnered with the AHS agriculture teacher (Mr. Joslin) and allowed students a few more hands on opportunities. He brought over new plants and allowed students to see all the parts of the plants under a microscope. Students could see the stems/veins inside the leaves, the pollen on the stamen, and many other intricate parts of the plant. Mr. Joslin also talked about how plants use the water, light and air to make their own food. He brought over flowering plants for the students to pot for mother's day gifts.
While teaching the first grade essential standard on retell, we integrated our light and shadow science standard. Students used shadow puppets to retell their favorite chapter from our shared reading book; Little Bear. Students created puppets for their characters and setting. Using flashlights, they cast shadows and retold the chapter.
