Your teachers need your help! We need a game for plant and animal cells and we want your input. Your team has been selected to design and develop an engaging educational game to assist your fellow students in learning about how cells are the basic building blocks of life. The game design with the most votes will be developed into a board game.
Science: S5L3. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to compare and contrast the parts of plant and animal cells
b. Develop a model to identify and label parts of a plant cell (membrane, wall, cytoplasm, nucleus, chloroplasts) and of an animal cell (membrane, cytoplasm, and nucleus)
c. Construct an explanation that differentiates between the structure of plant and animal cells.
Math: MGSE.5.MD.5 Relate volume to the operations of multiplication and addition and solve real world and mathematical problems involving volume.
b. Apply the formulas V = l × w × h and V = b × h for rectangular prisms to find volumes of right rectangular prisms with whole number edge lengths in the context of solving real world and mathematical problems.
ELA: ELAGSE5RI2: Determine two or more main ideas of a text and explain how they are supported by key details; summarize the text.
ELAGSE5W5: With guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, and editing. (Editing for conventions should demonstrate command of Language Standards 1–3 up to and including grade 5.)
You have been chosen to work with the Jaguar Security Company to design a state-of-the-art security system for one of our high priority clients! You will be presenting your plan, budget, and one working component of the security system to the clients in hopes that they will choose to purchase it from the company.
Science
S5P2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to investigate electricity.
b. Design a complete, simple electric circuit, & explain all necessary components.
c. Plan and carry out investigations on common materials to determine if they are insulators or conductors of electricity.
Math
MGSE.5.G.1 Use a pair of perpendicular number lines, called axes, to define a coordinate system, with the intersection of the lines (the origin) arranged to coincide with the 0 on each line and a given point in the plane located by using an ordered pair of numbers, called its coordinates. Understand that the first number indicates how far to travel from the origin in the direction of one axis, and the second number indicates how far to travel in the direction of the second axis, with the convention that the names of the two axes and the coordinates correspond (e.g., x-axis and x-coordinate, y-axis and y-coordinate).
Design and build a device that will blast a candy pumpkin into the air.
Children enjoy playing at the nature park, but heavy summer rains caused nearby Windy Creek to rise. The mayor and city officials are concerned soil erosion will make it dangerous for children to play at the park’s playground. The city needs help determining how to prevent the creeks’ bank from being washed away, while maintaining its natural beauty. They heard you were studying erosion and how you can offer a solution.
