Both in the Daycare and in the Preschool, children have a daily nap period. The transition to no longer taking a nap is carried out gradually, through a joint decision between the Educator and the family, always taking into account the child’s needs and well-being.
Yes. All children's meals are freshly prepared every day in our on-site kitchen. The menu is decided in a meeting between the educators, the cook, and the administrative staff. Weekly menus are posted in the school entrance hall.
At ADECO, both the Daycare and Preschool, offer extracurricular activities in Music and Yoga, promoting children’s overall development through body expression, musical expression, and emotional well-being.
In the Daycare these classes take place in the morning (schedule defined at the start of the school year).
In Preschool, activities are held in the late afternoon, as part of the extracurricular period.
ADECO also provides weekly Gymnastics classes (Friday mornings) for all Preschool children, at no extra cost. The Junta de Freguesia da Misericórdia makes its gym facilities available, and the children walk there (350 m) in small groups, accompanied by the education team.
At ADECO, our educational continuity and transition activities are designed to ensure that each child experiences their educational journey with emotional security, pedagogical coherence, and strong connections between contexts. Examples include:
Transition from Daycare → Preschool:
Children aged 2 to 3 who will be moving to Preschool, begin from the second term onwards, to visit the Open Classroom space accompanied by their educators. The visit takes place on Friday mornings, while the Preschool children’s have their gymnastics class. This gradual introduction helps them adapt to the new educational environment, ensuring a smooth and confident transition.
Transition from Preschool → Primary School (1st Cycle):
At the beginning of the second term, the group of 5–6-year-olds starts attending weekly sessions in the “graduates’ room,” where they develop skills in a playful way, preparing them for a gradual and positive transition into primary education.
ADECO works in collaboration with a clinical psychologist who provides support to children requiring specific assistance, in coordination with the early childhood educators and families.. This professional is present in the classroom once a week, both in the Daycare and Preschool, contributing to the early detection of difficulties, the definition of differentiated educational strategies, and the promotion of inclusion within the educational group.
Does ADECO encourage family participation in school life?
Family and community involvement — including alumni, their families, former staff, and friends — has been a cornerstone of ADECO since its foundation. ADECO’s management is carried out by a board composed of current and former parents, elected every four years at a General Assembly, reflecting the spirit of active participation within the educational community.
ADECO also promotes various creative activities led by family members, fostering strong connections between the school and families (see Plano Anual de Atividades).
Each year, the institution organizes a small Christmas Celebration where families surprise ADECO staff with a special presentation — whether a performance, a video, or another form of artistic expression.
In addition, a dinner is held for preschool graduates, their families, and the entire educational team, featuring performances and presentations by the children.
Finally, the Board and families organize an annual summer fair (arraial), an event that typically brings together around 200 members of the ADECO community, strengthening emotional bonds and the sense of belonging.
How are daycare and preschool fees calculated?
ADECO – Associação de Desenvolvimento Comunitário – is a Private Institution of Social Solidarity (IPSS) and, as such, applies the criteria defined by Social Security under cooperation agreements for Daycare and Preschool educational services.
Monthly fees are calculated based on the household’s per capita income, in accordance with Social Security Circular No. 6/2014, ensuring that the fee is adjusted to each family’s socioeconomic situation. This model aims to guarantee equitable access to services, promoting inclusion and social fairness.
It is important to note that ADECO’s Daycare is part of the “Creche Feliz” program, created by the government to ensure free daycare services for eligible families. Whenever the child meets the criteria established by Social Security, the monthly fee is fully covered by the State, with no cost to the family.
At the time of enrollment or renewal, families must provide proof of income and household composition so that the family contribution can be determined transparently and fairly.
Does the institution organize beach trips as part of its educational activities?
Yes. For the past 49 years, ADECO has organized a trip to Praia do Pescador in Costa da Caparica. Currently, a week-long beach program takes place at the end of June or beginning of July (dates announced during the school year). During that week, Daycare children go to the beach on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, while on the other two days they enjoy calmer workshops/activities at the school, led by external educational professionals. The cost of this activity is in addition to the regular monthly payments.
