ADECO - Associação de Desenvolvimento Comunitário da Freguesia das Mercês - was founded in 1976 on the initiative of a group of citizens formed into an association, who established a Kindergarten in the building located at Rua da Palmeira, 11, in Lisbon.
Since its foundation to the present day, ADECO has followed a pedagogical method based on Freinet's Pedagogy and influenced by the Modern School Movement and the Reggio Emilia Approach. ADECO promotes innovative pedagogical practices, centered on project work in open classrooms, valuing creativity, autonomy, and the active participation of children. Over five decades, it has established itself as a cultural and social reference in the parish, maintaining a strong connection with parents, collaborators, and local institutions.
From a social and citizenship perspective, it is a unique organization in the city, not only for the pedagogical method it has adopted but also for its organizational and management structure, in which parents, workers, and associates who keep the association alive are members of the board. It is an institution open to the community.
