Reflection Essay
Going into this course I didn't know what to expect. I've always done decently well in my past English classes, but this was my first college English course, and I was nervous for what was to come. I knew that I wasn't the best writer, and I was hoping that this course would help me with that. So, when I entered on the first day wanting to work harder than I have in my past English classes, I really felt like I was able to improve my writing in the course through all the various assignments. I honestly believe the reason I learned so much is because of the way that the course was designed. It was way easier for me to improve my writing skills when I was able to write about something that I really care about.
The first assignment that really helped me was the yelp review. It allowed me to adapt to different styles and tones while still being able to respond to a specific audience, purpose, or genre. In writing my Yelp review I wasn't 100% sure what I was going to write about, but with all of the work that we completed beforehand I was able to understand that I needed to use specific language to get my point across to an audience I've never written to before.
Another assignment that was able to teach me to get better was the poster. It showed me a different way to demonstrate an understanding of different visual rhetoric by using multimodal text. In creating my poster, I was able to learn how to use a different way to convince people to do different things. It helped me understand how I can use the poster to get people to come to boo bash and how to cater directly to my audience.
Lastly, writing my final essay literally helped me so much. It allowed me to use different reading strategies to understand and accomplish multiple writing tasks including the assignment instructions. In writing my essay I learned how to take the instructions of what to do and turn it into a comprehensive piece of writing that explains the reasons why my park achieves its purpose.
Overall, I really enjoyed this class and I'm so happy that I was able to take it. It helped me understand the aspects of writing so much more than I did before, and I hope that anyone else that takes this class will have the same great experience as I did.
