RICHARD HAROLD TEEPLE
STAFF SGT.
U.S. ARMY
Richard Harold Teeple was born on February 2nd, 1924, in Decatur, Indiana. In 1935 he lived in the Elkhart residence. Richard’s parents are Albert C. Teeple and Leona M. (Bartling) Teeple. Richard’s siblings were Robert, Raymond, Donald, Arthur, Albert, Thella, Patrice, and Geraldine. He attended Kirkland High School.
Richard was drafted into the military on March 15th, 1943, through the Adams County Service Board. He trained at Camp Perry Ohio and was assigned to the 37th Tank Battalion, 4th Armored Division. Richard’s brothers Robert and Raymond also served in the United States Army. Private Robert Teeple was stationed at Camp Hood Texas, and Corporal Raymond Teeple was stationed overseas.
Richard was apart of two major battles that the 37th Battalion was in. Those battles being the Battle of Arracourt, and The Relief of Bastogne. The Relief was a major battle for the battalion because they were the ones to relieve the 101st Airborne during the Battle of the Bulge.
Richard received the role of tank commander which led to him leading his own tank into the enemy lands during the war. He also built his way up to be a Staff Sargent, and that was the highest rank that he earned before he passed away.
The 37th battalion, 4th armored division took part in many battles during WWII, examples being the Battle of Arracourt, The Relief of Bastogne, The Batlle of the Bulge, The Lorraine Campaign, and The Drive to Czechoslovakia. The last three battles Richard was not apart of.
The passing of Richard Harold Teeple was on August 9th of 1944 in Normandy France. He died during The Battle of the Hedgerows. Richard was buried in Trickery Cemetery in Salem, Adams County Indiana. He also had a memorial marker in Brittany American Cemetery, St. James, France.
