HUBERT VAUGHN GLENDENING
1st LIEUTENANT
U.S. ARMY
Hubert Vaughn Glendening was born on October 26, 1917 in Geneva, Indiana. He was the son of Milo Bearl Glendening and Jessie Glendening (Stauffer) along with two brothers, William, born around 1916, and James, born in 1922. He attended Hartford High School in Hartford township.
Both Hubert and James served in the United States Army. Hubert entered the army in February 1941 as a 1st Lieutenant and brother James, attended West Point Military Academy and served in Italy where he was captured and spent time as a Prisoner of War by the German Army. He would return to the states after the war and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.
Lt. Hubert Glendening was assigned to the 745th Aviation Ordnance Company. The 745th served in the Southwest Pacific Theatre at Fort Stotsenburg, Clark Field on the Island of Luzon in the Philippine Islands. On December 8th (in the Pacific), 1941 the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, Guam, Wake Island, Malaya, Singapore, Hong Kong, and the Philippines. The Battle of the Philippines lasted from December 8, 1941 to May 8, 1942 where the United States forces fought with Filipino troops against the Imperial Japanese Army. Despite a fierce, months long defense, the Filipino and American troops were forced to surrender by May 1942.
Upon surrender/capture, Lieutenant Glendening was forced to march in what became known as the "Bataan Death March" to Camp O'Donnell. Lt. Glendening died at Camp O'Donnell from wounds received in combat in the defense of the Philippines on May 31, 1942. Hubert Glendening was buried in the Camp O'Donnell Prisoner of War Cemetery in the Philippine Islands.
Camp O' Donnell was liberated on January 30, 1945 and only 83 survived of the original 2,047 prisoners of war. Many of the prisoners had no shelter and many died of disease, starvation, or torture. Upon conclusion of the war, all of the men who had died at the camp(including Hubert), were disinterred and many were returned to the states at the request of the family. Hubert is buried in the U.S. Armed Forces Cemetery No. 2, Plot F Row 16 Grave 98, in Manila, Philippines. A memorial marker was placed at the Westlawn Cemetery Geneva, Indiana.
For his service and sacrifice, Lt. Glendening earned the Purple Heart, American Defense Service Medal, American Theatre Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, Prisoner of War Medal, Philippine Defense Medal, and the WWII Victory Medal.
