Unified Projects

Our students with and without disabilities collaborate to serve our school community.

ACTION for Unity is committed to supporting students with intellectual and physical disabilities. We promote projects that build a spirit of respect and acceptance for all students. Conservation has been a main focus.

2019 - 2021 Conservation Project Work Continues

We are proud recipients of the Bright Ideas Grant for 2019-2020. As part of our new Leadership in Action program, 5th period students completed the following projects with the support of Mid-Carolina Electric Cooperative, DonorsChoose, Wenzinger Woodworks, and SC Wildlife Federation.

Our Unified Partners Team:

1. Participated in a series of educational lectures by Mr. Jay Keck, South Carolina Wildlife Federation. (Note: Mr. Keck served as an expert mentor as students complete this year's conservation projects.)

2. Built and installed five nesting boxes on campus.

Note: Due to COVID-19, our 2019 spring projects were put on hold until school re-opened. Activities #3 & 4 were completed during the 2020-21 school year while following recommended safety protocols. Our goal is to complete the Carolina Fence Garden during the 2021-22 school year with the help of our FIVE leadership students.

3. Add native plants to the schoolyard habitat at the bottom of the recess hill. Students will then build a multicultural fence to surround the area.

4. Develop the pond shoreline by planting perennials, shrubs, and small trees.

5. Create a Carolina fence garden. (To be completed 2021-22)

2018 -19 Unified Partners Conservation Project at Irmo Middle

We are a Green Steps School. This year, our students with and without disabilities collaborated on a conservation project to attract native birds to our campus. Our young naturalists developed a schoolyard habitat by adding trees, bushes, and perennials to provide nuts and fruits for birds throughout the year. Our student buddies planted shrubs and perennials, too.

ACTION Club students attended a series of Lunch & Learns conducted by career mentors in the fields of horticulture and wildlife (Wingard's Nursery and SC Wildlife). Mentors to worked alongside the teens during these sessions of inquiry and discovery. The students learned from their mentors, and then taught our students with special needs.

Our Unified Partners Team also met every Friday with their buddies to reinforce academic and social skills. In addition, the athletes and their buddies participate in the Special Olympics.

The National( Wildlife Federation (NWF), America’s largest wildlife conservation and education organization, recognized that Irmo Middle School successfully created a Certified Schoolyard Habitat® through its Garden for Wildlife program. Irmo Middle School joined with over 5,000 schools nationwide who have transformed their schoolyards into thriving wildlife habitats. Congratulations to ACTION's Unified Partners Team for their work on this project.

2017-18 Unified Partners Team: Outdoor Classroom Project

Champions of the Environment Winner - $2000 Project Award

Description: This ACTION Team worked together to care for the outdoor classroom at our school. Twice a month, students were responsible for general maintenance – filling bird feeders, as well as weeding and planting as needed. The group worked with a mentor from Riverbanks Botanical Gardens. Team members attended Lunch & Learns led by community experts to learn more about conservation practices, including how to provide a food garden for pollinators. Our goal was to attract insects, butterflies, and birds to the area by increasing plant and flower diversity in the outdoor classroom. We finished filling out backyard wetland garden and added a poetry rock garden with inspirational messages.

Other activities for the Unified Partners Team:

1. Shared Friday homeroom time: ACTION students visit Mrs. Deming's class during "den" every week to provide academic support, maintain the outdoor classroom, and participate in activities such as the Sonic card fundraiser.

2. Field trips such as unified bowling tournament and the spring Special Olympics
