Signature projects are activities completed by the whole group to spread our message:
Kindness is the answer, never hate.
Students decide what the club's big projects will be for each coming year.
Conservation Projects
Learning - Doing - Teaching: Students work together to support the Green Steps initiative. Our planting projects prevented further erosion of a pond shoreline and created a wildlife habitat.
2. Finding Your Joy Project
Even through difficult times, we can find joy. Many middle school students do not easily recognize the feelings of others. Photography helps students to work on communication, empathy, and teamwork while seeing their community through a new lens.
3. Letter Writing Campaign
Students write letters to local teams, organizations, businesses, and civic leaders. See the list of supporters who have responded to the call to action.
4. ACTION Rallies
The ACTION Club's schoolwide assemblies start the year.
2018 - Alana Simmons (Founder, national Hate Won't Win Movement) and Fraendy Clervaud (Good Day Columbia, morning anchor) spoke at Irmo Middle.
2017 - Guest Speaker: Leeza Gibbons
2016 - Guest Speaker: Sgt. McDaniels (RCSD)
2015 - Guest Speaker: Dr. Lilly Filler, SC Holocaust Council
5. Community Outreach Projects
Our prison outreach is one example of how our students choose to spread a message of love to their community.
Students are encouraged to inspire other teens through their art and writing in a school-wide competition. Top entries are published in the school literary magazine.
8. Black History Month Celebrations
ACTION groups host community celebrations for Black History Month with entertainment, food, stories, music, and motivational speakers.
9. Anti-bullying Film Projects
We have partnered with Ahmir (R&B group based out of Boston), Tim Tebow, the Columbia Fireflies, Richland County Sheriff's Department, Lexington County Sheriff's Department, and the SC State Museum to create anti-bullying videos.
