Traditional research is a systematic way of creating new knowledge, test theories, or explore new ideas. Traditional research is very linear in which one has or creates a hypothesis, then they collect the data, analyze the data and build a conclusion.
Action research focuses on specific content and attempts to solve problems. Action requires researchers to be more involved with identifying the issue and implementing change.
Quantitative research is a data collection approach that is used in a more numeric way. The main purpose of this form is to prove a hypothesis. So if there is a hypothesis, we use the data collected to test the hypothesis. Quantitative is mainly seen in surveys, experiments, or any statistical analysis.
Example: A university surveys 500 students to measure average study hours per week
This would be a good example since the average will be taken from all the data being collected.
Qualitative research is used when exploring a new idea or when trying to create a hypothesis on something. This type of research is used mainly to answer the "why" and "how" questions. Qualitative research focuses more on human experiences and feelings.
Example: Observing how employees interact with new software in their daily work routine
This would be a good example as it is more focused on user experience instead of numbers or surveys.
Methodology
The first phase will consist of understanding the students' perspective by conducting a survey. The second phase will consist of providing qualitative information on how students use social media for academic purposes The collected data will be analyzed and provide a comprehensive view of the role of social media in learning
Conclusion
Students are not against the idea of using social media as an educational tool. However, the way social media is currently being used is more a distraction then a tool. I cannot conclude that social media cannot not be used to enhance student. But based on the data I collected if social media were to provide more educational material that can be utilized in classes. Students would be open to using a platform they are all familiar with and also use it for communication purposes.
Future Research
For future research, I would like to explore the following:
Effectiveness of specific platforms
What type of material would students be interested
