We all try our best to be thoughtful consumers and reduce our plastic use in everyday life, however, sometimes we can be using single-use plastics without our knowledge! These hidden plastics can be found everywhere in our daily lives and can be very harmful to the environment. They can end up in landfills for thousands of years and as they break down end up poisoning the soil with the harmful volatile organic compounds they excrete. These compounds can even end up in our waterways and into our drinking water and cause intense irritation to our respiratory system! So, it is best for us to be mindful of these hidden plastics and avoid them as much as possible.
1) Teabags
Many teabags contain plastic!
Although many tea companies are making the change to biodegradable alternatives, it is still important we keep an eye out for this hidden plastic! Choosing for loose tea is always the safest option to avoid unnecessary plastic use.
2) Party Buntings and Glitter
Party decorations also contain multitudes of plastic for example in balloons, banners, even in glitter! Here we can try opting for homemade buntings and biodegradable glitter.
3) Wrapping Paper
Wrapping paper is often non-recyclable and non-biodegradable so choose untreated brown paper to wrap your gifts
4) Chewing Gum
Chewing gum contains plastic and takes thousands of years to bio-degrade! Next time you want to freshen your breath chose a breath mint.
5) Wet Wipes
Wet wipes are made of plastic and can clog up our sewer system if they get flushed down the toilet. Bet course of action is to use reusable pads and cloths for all your cleaning needs
6) Cigarette Butts
Cigarette butts are the most discarded item on the planet and unfortunately because they are made from plastic, they never really breakdown! Be sure to dispose of these butts as carefully as possible and the best way to be eco-conscious is to quit altogether!
