The present analysis of piano tones has two objectives:

- extraction (estimation) of physical parameters, in order to build a physical model of the instrument

- find reliable descriptors, in accordance with the perceptive evaluation of the tones by listeners

Such analyses usually are performed in time domain or in frequency domain. In some cases, simultaneous time and frequency analysis must be performed. This is, for example, the case for extracting the frequency-dependent decay parameters of piano tones.
