The fourth core unit focuses on Peace and Conflict. Conflict can be most simply defined as a clash of interests, and it can manifest in many different ways that vary in their degree of violence. Conflict can be psychological, it can be low level discrimination, or it can be a full-fledged war. Sometimes conflict does not manifest at all, but stays latent, or under the surface, for years until it finally erupts.
Peace is a very contested concept. The most minimal definition of it is 'absence of war', also known as negative peace, but scholars are divided over what a more holistic, positive definition of peace would entail. Positive peace is generally strongly linked to high standards of human rights and development - if we imagine a 'peaceful society', these are often factors we would contemplate. Building peace is a very tricky endeavour, as we will find out.
